Chimpanzee Civil War: Insights into Primate and Human Conflict

In Uganda's Kibale National Park, the world's largest known group of wild chimpanzees has been embroiled in a fierce internal conflict for the past eight years. This once harmonious community of nearly 200 Ngogo chimpanzees, previously known for their cooperative behavior, has split into two factions: the Western and Central groups. The division, which began to surface in 2015, has led to 24 recorded killings, including 17 infants, primarily targeting the Central group.

Several factors may have contributed to this schism. The deaths of key adult males and females in 2014 disrupted social networks, while a change in the alpha male the following year coincided with the initial separation. Additionally, a respiratory epidemic in 2017 claimed the lives of 25 chimpanzees, further fracturing the group's social fabric.

Aaron Sandel, an anthropologist and co-director of the Ngogo Chimpanzee Project, highlights the territorial nature of chimpanzees and their fear of strangers as underlying causes of the conflict. This situation prompts a reevaluation of human conflict dynamics, suggesting that relational dynamics, rather than human constructs like religion or politics, may play a more significant role in warfare.

James Brooks from the German Primate Center emphasizes the importance of learning from the group-based behaviors of other species to better understand human societal divisions. The study of these chimpanzees offers a poignant reminder of the dangers posed by group divisions and the potential lessons for human societies.
