EFF Bids Farewell to X: A Strategic Shift in Digital Advocacy

After nearly two decades, we're stepping away from X, formerly known as Twitter. This decision wasn't easy, but the numbers speak for themselves. In 2018, our posts reached up to 100 million impressions monthly, but by 2024, that number dwindled to just 2 million. The platform's evolution under Elon Musk didn't meet our expectations for transparency, security, and user control. Musk's acquisition led to significant changes, including the dismissal of the human rights team, which prompted many users to leave, and now, we're joining them.

Our continued presence on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube might seem contradictory, but it's strategic. These platforms are vital for reaching diverse communities, including young people, people of color, and activists who rely on them for connection and information. While we criticize these platforms for their shortcomings, we remain to ensure that users have access to crucial digital rights information.

Leaving X doesn't mean we're stepping back from the fight for digital rights. We're focusing our efforts on platforms where we can make the most impact, such as Bluesky, Mastodon, and LinkedIn. Our commitment to protecting digital rights remains unwavering, and we invite you to join us on these platforms as we continue our advocacy.
