AI Summary
Long-distance relationships (LDRs) have become increasingly common, especially among young adults pursuing education or career opportunities. Despite the challenges of physical separation, many couples find solace in shared activities like playing multiplayer video games. This study delves into how 13 couples in LDRs use gaming as a medium to maintain their relationships, exploring the dynamics of game mechanics and modalities that foster intimacy and connection.
We employed a mixed-methods approach, including diary studies and semi-structured interviews, to understand the social dynamics and preferences of these couples. Our findings reveal that games serve as a crucial tool for relational maintenance, allowing couples to simulate real-life activities and express affection. We identified various play styles and developed couple archetypes to inform future game design tailored to LDRs.
The research highlights the importance of cooperative and competitive multiplayer games in maintaining relationship quality. Couples often appropriate game mechanics to express love and support, such as crafting in-game gifts or engaging in shared missions. These behaviors align with established relational maintenance strategies, emphasizing positivity, assurances, and openness.
Despite the potential of games to bridge the gap in physical presence, there is a notable lack of games explicitly designed for couples, particularly those in LDRs. Our study suggests that integrating features like shared inside jokes or personalized crafting could enhance the gaming experience for these couples.
We also explored the concept of 'memories' and 'physicalness' in gaming. To address the need for better memory storage, we prototyped a digital diary application that allows couples to save and organize gameplay screenshots and recordings. Additionally, we propose participatory design work to develop haptic technologies that simulate physical intimacy, enhancing the feeling of presence.
While our study provides valuable insights, it is limited by the small sample size and cultural homogeneity of participants. Future research should explore diverse cultural contexts and non-traditional relationship dynamics to broaden the understanding of gaming's role in LDRs.
In conclusion, digital games offer a unique platform for LDR couples to maintain emotional connections. By understanding and enhancing the gaming experience, designers and researchers can create more effective tools for this growing demographic.
