F1's New Hybrid Rules Debut at Miami Grand Prix

In May, the Miami Grand Prix will showcase new hybrid rules in Formula 1, introducing significant changes to how electric motors, known as MGU-Ks, contribute to race dynamics. In key acceleration zones, the MGU-K can now deliver its full 350 kW, enhancing the V6 engine's 400 kW. Outside these zones, the MGU-K is limited to 250 kW, aiming to reduce speed differentials. Additionally, drivers can use a boost capped at 150 kW when close to a competitor. These adjustments are designed to simplify energy management for drivers, though hybrid powertrains remain complex and somewhat unpredictable.

To address issues like cars failing to start properly, a new 'low power start detection' system will be tested. This system activates full MGU-K deployment if a car struggles off the line, with warning lights alerting to the issue. Normally, the MGU-K kicks in only above 50 km/h. The FIA will evaluate this system's effectiveness before deciding on its permanent implementation for the 2026 season.

Further changes include adaptations for wet conditions, such as hotter tire blankets and adjusted MGU-K deployment limits, along with clearer rain light signals. These updates aim to maintain the excitement of F1 races while addressing criticisms and enhancing safety.
