Kdenlive's Progress and Future Plans in 2026

In 2025, the Kdenlive team made significant strides in enhancing the software's stability and performance while introducing new features. We prioritized stability over feature creep, ensuring a balanced development approach. Our revamped website now includes historical content dating back to 2002, and we strengthened our collaboration with MLT developers, contributing to OpenTimelineIO improvements.

## Release Highlights

Throughout the year, we adhered to the KDE Gear release cycle, delivering three major releases. The 25.04.0 release introduced an automatic masking tool and improved background removal with the Object Segmentation plugin. We also enhanced OpenTimelineIO functionality and boosted audio waveform performance by 300%. The 25.08.0 release focused on stabilization, addressing over 300 commits and fixing numerous crashes. We revamped the audio mixer and improved the guides and markers system. The 25.12.0 release emphasized user experience, introducing a welcome screen and a flexible docking system.

## The Road Ahead

Looking forward to 26.04, we're excited to introduce features like monitor mirroring and animated transition previews. These enhancements will streamline editing workflows, especially in collaborative environments. We're also working on playback speed adjustments, clip imports, and audio thumbnail generation.

## Roadmap and Dopesheet Development

Our roadmap includes integrating new MLT features, such as 10/12 bit color support and OpenFX compatibility. We're also refactoring the subtitle system and advancing the Advanced Trimming Tools. A significant focus is on the Dopesheet, which will allow for detailed keyframe management, supported by an NGI Zero Commons grant.

## Community and Contributions

In 2025, 38 contributors, half of whom were first-timers, enriched Kdenlive with their code. The core team consists of 8 active members, and we celebrated productive sprints in Amsterdam and Berlin, refining workflows and planning future developments. The community's engagement is vital, as seen in our impressive download statistics and continued financial support.

## Funding and Support

Despite not actively soliciting donations, we received €9,344.80 in 2025, enabling ongoing development and support for our maintainer, Jean-Baptiste. We encourage users to contribute financially or through community involvement, such as bug reporting, translation, and promotion.

## User Engagement

Kdenlive's user base spans continents, with significant activity in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. We invite users to share their projects and participate in community events to foster growth and collaboration.
