Linux Kernel Embraces AI-Generated Code with Human Oversight

The Linux kernel has updated its guidelines to allow AI-generated code, provided it undergoes thorough human review and certification. This move acknowledges the growing role of AI in programming, although it remains a contentious topic. The guidelines stipulate that AI agents cannot add Signed-off-by tags; only humans can certify the Developer Certificate of Origin (DCO). Human submitters must review AI-generated code, ensure licensing compliance, and take full responsibility for any issues. The guidelines also recommend using an Assisted-by tag to indicate AI involvement, along with specifying the AI model and tools used.

The release of Linux 7.0, led by Linus Torvalds, coincided with these guideline updates. While not a revolutionary update, Linux 7.0 introduces stable Rust support, performance optimizations, and early support for AMD Zen 6 and Intel Nova Lake, along with enhanced security and a self-healing XFS filesystem. Torvalds highlighted the use of AI tools in identifying bugs, suggesting that AI's role in development may become the 'new normal.' The release included various fixes across networking, architecture, and tooling, showcasing the diverse contributions AI can support.
