Mastering Guitar Through Listening and Transcribing

Years ago, I stumbled upon a video by guitar teacher Justin Sandercoe that transformed my approach to playing guitar. Inspired by his method, I want to share this invaluable technique with you. Growing up in the 90s, my friends and I relied on guitar magazines for tabs, but this didn't lead to true mastery. Instead, I learned that the guitar greats honed their skills by listening to music and imitating what they heard.

To improve, start with an easy song, like 'Breaking the Law' by Judas Priest or 'The Distance' by Cake. With your guitar in hand and tab paper ready, play the song, pause at each note, find it on your guitar, and write it down. This process may seem daunting at first, but perseverance is key. Once you've transcribed the song, compare your tabs with online versions to refine your work. Watching live performances can also reveal unique playing techniques.

After transcribing, you'll find that playing the song becomes easier, as you've internalized the music through repeated listening. Create a playlist of the songs you've learned and practice playing them in full. This approach emphasizes learning entire songs, not just riffs, which is crucial for developing as a guitarist.

Whether you focus on solos or rhythm parts, this method enhances your ability to hear and replicate music.
