Navigating the Challenges of Gen Z: Education, Work, and Creativity

As a member of Gen Z, I find myself grappling with the unique challenges that define our generation. Our high school years were largely spent on Zoom, a consequence of the pandemic that left us navigating a post-secondary education system in disarray. Underfunding and shifting federal policies have only added to the chaos, leaving even our mentors disillusioned. Despite these hurdles, I remain passionate about my craft as an animator, inspired by my father, a veteran artist at Marvel. However, entering the creative job market is daunting, with AI presenting a significant obstacle.

The pandemic's impact on mental health has been profound, with studies showing a direct correlation between online learning and increased depression and anxiety among teens. During the second wave of Covid, up to 70% of teenagers in my province reported symptoms of depression. For me, art became a refuge from the overwhelming stress. I found solace in video games like 'The Last of Us' and transformed my room into a creative sanctuary, painting manga and comic book scenes on my walls. This artistic expression allowed me to explore new worlds without leaving my home.
