Navigating the MacBook Notch: Tailscale's Interface Evolution

Tailscale aims to seamlessly connect devices, but on some MacBooks, its icon could vanish into the notch, leaving users puzzled. Initially, Tailscale was a command-line tool and a menu bar utility. However, with the introduction of the 2021 MacBook Pro models featuring a notch, the Tailscale icon sometimes disappeared, hidden by other menu bar icons. Apple's minimalist design approach left no room for overflow or rearrangement, causing user confusion.

To address this, Tailscale developers implemented a temporary fix using occlusionState data to detect when the icon was obscured, triggering a pop-up warning. Although not foolproof, this solution helped users locate their settings. Meanwhile, Apple could improve the situation by preventing icons from rendering in the notch area or providing developers with more control over icon placement.

The real breakthrough came with the introduction of a new windowed interface for Tailscale's macOS app. This interface, available from version 1.96.2, complements the menu bar app and offers enhanced accessibility. Users can now access a searchable list of tailnet devices, easily ping and copy IP addresses, and send files through Taildrop. The interface also features a mini player, a product tour, and a red dot on the Dock icon to indicate critical errors.

This new interface is designed to make Tailscale's features more accessible and user-friendly, and feedback is encouraged to further refine it. A similar UI is in development for Windows, as Tailscale continues to blend functionality with a touch of whimsy.
