Reallocating My $100 Monthly Spend from Claude to More Flexible Tools

I've found myself increasingly frustrated with hitting the usage limits of Claude, despite paying $100 a month. My usage is bursty, often hitting limits during critical coding sessions. To address this, I've decided to reallocate my spending to other tools and models that offer more flexibility.

## Exploring Alternatives

I enjoy having options, and while Opus is a leader in agentic coding, I explore other models to balance cost and speed based on task complexity. An 'agent harness' like Claude Code coordinates interactions with LLMs, integrating tool definitions into workflows. However, I'm now considering Zed and OpenRouter as alternatives.

## Zed and OpenRouter

Zed offers a more streamlined experience compared to VSCode, with a basic but effective agent harness. It integrates Claude Code and other tools using the Agent Client Protocol, although it lacks the extensive extensions of VSCode. I prefer OpenRouter's integration with Zed, which allows for larger context window sizes, avoiding Zed's limitations. OpenRouter also offers a broad range of models and providers, with flexible credit usage that doesn't expire for a year.

## Cursor and Other Tools

I initially switched to Cursor from VSCode for its advanced agentic coding features. Cursor's latest version focuses on agent orchestration, offering unique rule applications for specific file types. Despite its cost, Cursor remains my preferred editor due to its comprehensive extension support and innovative features.

## Configuring Claude Code with OpenRouter

While I'm moving funds away from Anthropic, I still value Claude Code's harness. By configuring it to use OpenRouter instead of the Anthropic API, I can continue leveraging its capabilities with different models. This involves setting environment variables to direct Claude Code to OpenRouter's endpoints.

## Conclusion

By subscribing to Zed and maintaining a Cursor subscription, I allocate the remaining budget to OpenRouter credits. This setup provides flexibility and ensures I don't lose unused credits. For those facing similar limitations with Claude, I recommend trying Zed and OpenRouter for a more adaptable coding experience.
