South Korea Launches Universal Basic Mobile Data Access

In a groundbreaking move, South Korea has introduced a universal basic mobile data access scheme, ensuring over seven million subscribers can enjoy unlimited downloads at 400 kbps once their data allowances are depleted. This initiative, backed by the nation's major carriers SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus, is part of a broader effort to restore public trust following significant security breaches. Deputy Prime Minister Bae Kyunghoon emphasized the necessity of this scheme to guarantee basic telecommunications rights and to spearhead a future led by AI advancements. Alongside this, South Korea's telcos have committed to offering affordable 5G plans and enhancing data services for senior citizens, as well as upgrading Wi-Fi on public transport. The government is also incentivizing further investment in AI-supportive networks, aiming for a comprehensive transformation in public welfare and technological leadership.
