The Fiery Return of Artemis II: What to Expect

As NASA gears up for the return of Artemis II, the focus is on the critical role of the Orion spacecraft's heat shield. NASA's administrator, Jared Isaacman, expressed confidence in the heat shield's new entry profile after a comprehensive review. Despite thorough testing, the true test comes with the actual flight. Amit Kshatriya, a top NASA official, acknowledged the presence of irrational fears but emphasized the absence of rational ones.

The reentry process involves a sequence of precise actions. Once the heat shield withstands the intense heat, the forward bay cover will be jettisoned at 35,000 feet, allowing drogue parachutes to deploy at 22,000 feet. Subsequently, pilot parachutes will release the main parachutes at 6,000 feet, aiming to slow the spacecraft to a safe 20 mph splashdown. The deployment of parachutes, a critical moment without backup, has been a staple of space missions for decades.

Upon splashdown, recovery teams from the USS John P. Murtha will secure Orion with an inflatable 'front porch' at its hatch. The calm weather forecast promises a smooth recovery operation. Astronauts Christina Koch, Victor Glover, Jeremy Hansen, and Wiseman will be extracted in sequence and flown back to the recovery ship for initial checks. If all proceeds as planned, they will return to Houston to reunite with their families.
