The Impact of Rising DRAM Prices on the Hobbyist SBC Market

Raspberry Pi has announced another round of price hikes for its models equipped with LPDDR4 RAM, including a new 3GB RAM Pi 4 priced at $83.75 and the 16GB Pi 5 reaching a steep $299.99. These increases are not an April Fool's joke but a reflection of the current state of the hobbyist single-board computer (SBC) market. The escalating costs of DRAM have significantly impacted the affordability and availability of high-end SBCs, with LPDDR chips now constituting the bulk of board costs. This trend is not limited to Raspberry Pi but affects all SBC vendors, leading to fewer new board releases and making models with more than 4GB of RAM unaffordable for most hobbyists.

As a result, many enthusiasts, including myself, are forced to pivot towards older SBCs and microcontrollers for our projects, which are more budget-friendly. The rising prices also affect mini PCs, which now cost over $250 for 8GB models, and even used PCs have become pricier. This shift limits the scope of projects I can undertake, as I aim to keep costs below $100 to facilitate learning without the fear of damaging expensive components.

While Raspberry Pi may weather the storm thanks to its robust microcontroller ecosystem and industrial partnerships, smaller vendors might struggle to survive. Eben Upton of Raspberry Pi remains hopeful that memory prices will eventually decrease, but the timeline is uncertain. Until then, the hobbyist SBC market is at risk of dwindling, with only a few vendors like Radxa maintaining a steady release of new products.
