Why I Finally Turned Off Google AdSense After 20 Years

In 2005, I eagerly joined Google AdSense to earn some money and gain firsthand insights into the online advertising industry. Back then, the landscape was ripe for experimentation, with some clicks earning as much as $20. Although I never struck it rich, making about $1,000 annually at my peak, the experience was invaluable for understanding the publisher's perspective and the mechanics of AdSense.

Fast forward 20 years, and the reasons for my participation have largely evaporated. My earnings have dwindled to a negligible $100 per year, and I frequently run afoul of AdSense's content rules due to Masnick’s Impossibility Theorem. Additionally, the insights I once gleaned from being an AdSense publisher have diminished, and the intrusive nature of the ads has sparked complaints from my readers. Despite attempts to limit ad formats, AdSense's aggressive expansion has cluttered my blog with unwanted banners, which I often miss due to my adblocker.

Moreover, removing AdSense aligns my blog more clearly as a non-commercial entity, reducing potential legal liabilities associated with commercial operations. The minimal income was not worth the added legal risks. Thus, I've decided to remove all AdSense ads from my site. If any ads persist, I encourage readers to inform me so I can address the issue. Ending this long-standing relationship is bittersweet, but it's a necessary step.
