In a stark warning, Fatih Birol, the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, highlighted the severe global repercussions of the ongoing Iran conflict, which has led to the blockage of vital oil and gas supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. With Europe facing a potential jet fuel shortage in just six weeks, there is a looming threat of flight cancellations if the situation persists. Birol emphasized that this crisis, the largest energy challenge ever faced, will disproportionately affect developing countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, exacerbating economic disparities.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which nearly 20% of the world's traded oil passes, remains a focal point of concern. Birol warned that if the strait is not reopened soon, the economic impact will be felt globally, with higher fuel prices and potential recessions in weaker economies. Airlines like KLM and easyJet are already feeling the strain, with KLM cutting flights due to rising kerosene costs.

Birol criticized Iran's 'toll booth' system for ships passing through the strait, cautioning against setting a precedent that could affect other vital waterways like the Malacca Strait. He stressed the importance of maintaining free and unconditional oil flow to prevent further economic destabilization.

The conflict has also caused significant damage to energy facilities in the Persian Gulf, with over 80 key assets affected, delaying a return to pre-conflict production levels by up to two years. This situation underscores the vulnerability of global energy infrastructure to geopolitical tensions.
